چکیده

We investigated sensorimotor adaptation to auditory feedback perturbations during speech production. In Study I, formant or fundamental frequency (F0) feedback was manipulated during sustained vowels. When F0 feedback was altered, group data showed upward F0 adjustments regardless of the feedback shift direction. When formant feedback was altered, group data showed opposing adjustments in both the first and second formant. Sensorimotor adaptation was present at vowel onset, and subjects showed aftereffects when the auditory perturbation was removed. For Studies II (acoustics) and III (kinematics), subjects produced monosyllabic words while upward or downward formant feedback shifts were applied. Acoustic results replicated those for sustained vowels. Kinematic analyses of jaw and tongue positions and displacements indicated motor-equivalent adaptation in the overall gestures rather than individual articulators. Findings are highly consistent with recent data on limb movements and suggest continuous updating of forward and/or inverse internal models of the articulationto-acoustics transformations in the vocal tract.

Consonant context effects on vowel sensorimotor adaptation

Speech sensorimotor adaptation is the short-term learning of modified articulator movements evoked through sensoryfeedback perturbations. A common experimental method manipulates acoustic parameters, such as formant frequencies, using real time resynthesis of the participant's speech to perturb auditory feedback. While some studies have examined phrases comprised of vowels, diphthongs, and semi...

Integration of auditory and somatosensory error signals in the neural control of speech movements.

We investigated auditory and somatosensory feedback contributions to the neural control of speech. In task I, sensorimotor adaptation was studied by perturbing one of these sensory modalities or both modalities simultaneously. The first formant (F1) frequency in the auditory feedback was shifted up by a real-time processor and/or the extent of jaw opening was increased or decreased with a force...

Acoustic and kinematic characteristics of vowel production through a virtual vocal tract in dysarthria

Broadening our understanding of the components and processes of speech sensorimotor learning is crucial to furthering methods of speech neurorehabilitation. Recent research in limb sensorimotor control has used virtual environments to study learning in novel sensorimotor working spaces. Comparable experimental paradigms have yet to be undertaken to study speech learning. We present acoustic and...

Session 2aSC: Linking Perception and Production (Poster Session) 2aSC55. Speech sensorimotor learning through a virtual vocal tract

Studies of speech sensorimotor learning often manipulate auditory feedback by modifying isolated acoustic parameters such as formant frequency or fundamental frequency using near real-time resynthesis of a participant's speech. An alternative approach is to engage a participant in a total remapping of the sensorimotor working space using a virtual vocal tract. To support this approach for study...

Acoustic Study of an Auditorium by the Determination of Reverberation Time and Speech Transmission Index

The quality of the communication between teachers and students and ultimately, of classroom education itself, is closely linked to the acoustic quality of the auditorium. This acoustic quality can be characterized based on the reverberation time (RT), speech transmission index (STI) and the sound insulation. In this context, an acoustic study was conducted in an auditorium located in the Higher...
